Not only is there a charming 190 year old log dwelling, lovingly preserved, updated and steeped in history.... a dwelling that Hansel and Gretel might have stubbled upon in the forest, there also a perfect property with almost 1000 feet of excellent waterfront on one of the premier lakes of the Unesco Heritage Site and the headwater of the Rideau System - Upper Rideau Lake. Relish in complete privacy at the end of a four season road, just minutes from the excitement of Westport and Newboro. Find a deep water dock on one side for boats, a sand beach walk-in on the end and a weed freeswim dock and raft on the other side. This oasis property is surrounded by water - like living on an island that you can drive to. Ample outbuildings add a workshop, storage, garage an bunkie opportunity. This property is evidence that the best lakeside properties were chosen first. It is truly magical and must be seen if you are in search of a family legacy investment.
THE COTTAGE:
The historic two-story log house was build in the late 1830s by William and Rose (McNally) Kearney. It was located on Lot 2, Concession 5, in North Crosby Township, on the weatern corner of a 112-acre farm purchased by Rose's brohter, Henry McNally, in 1831. The house was replaced by a larger home around 1860. It was then used for farm machinery until 1932, when it was relocated by Joseph V. McNally to the eastern corner of the farm property, on a beautiful treed lot along McNally's Bay near the Rideau Canal at Newboro. Joseph had the log building enlarged and renovated, naming the well-treed lakeshore estate "The Hemlocks". When he died in 1957, he bequeathed the propety to a niece, Gertrude (McNally) Jones. She enjoyed it as a summer home until selling it to Ernest and Lois Weston in 1980. The current owner purchased the hand-hewn squared log cottage two years later as a summer retreat for their family.
